2010 Z Route

NOTE! Route Change! The second loop from Hatherleigh has been changed for safety!
(Changes in BOLD)

The 2010 Z route is for the more serious and experienced cyclists among us, offering a route of approx 100 miles, with some nice hills thrown in for good measure.

It is scheduled to have an average speed of 14mph- which means you will need to be comfortable riding at approx 18mph on the flat.

Please only look to this route if you have completed the challenge before and know what it involves, or are an experienced rider.

The 2010 Z route starts with the D route at Plymouth yacht club, at 8.30 am.

From here, it follows past the National Marine Aquarium, and along the Embankment road up to Marsh Mills Retail Park, where it follows the cycle path up to Yelverton. This is a great cycle path, following the old train track. It has a gentle climb, and will really get you warmed up for the day's riding ahead.

At Yelverton, the 2 rides split, and the Z route heads out along the B3212- across Dartmoor on one of the highest roads in the South West- to Moretonhampstead fro morning coffee.

Refreshed, you will then head back to Hatherleigh along the A382 towards Hatherleigh, where you will stop for lunch with the D riders.

After lunch there is no rest, as the Z group will then cycle out to Brandis Corner along the challenging A3072 (changed- the Z route will now no longer go as far as Holsworthy), and back towards the afternoon stop of Torrington along the A388 (taking the right at Stibbs Cross along the B3227).

From here, it is a generally flat ride with both groups together onto Barnstaple along the scenic Tarka Trail, alongside the rivers Torridge and Taw, finishing at Buddys Bar, Barnstaple.
